Is it free?
Yes. Reading timelines, writing your own, the daily question, streaks and levels — all free, and they stay free. There is no ad in the app and no feed algorithm selling your attention.
There will eventually be a paid tier, and we would rather tell you now than surprise you later: it is for extras like starting your own question rooms and keeping a longer archive of what you have written. Nothing that exists free today moves behind it.
What is TestFlight, and how do I get in?
TestFlight is Apple's official app for trying builds that are not on the App Store yet. You install TestFlight from the App Store, tap our invite link, and whatIf installs alongside your normal apps. It is not a jailbreak or a sideload — Apple runs it.
Two honest caveats. Apple caps public beta testers, so slots are limited and we hand them out in batches. And a TestFlight build expires after 90 days, so you will get a prompt to update — that is normal, not a bug.
Android?
Not yet, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. whatIf is one small team, and the swipe mechanic is the entire product — we would rather it feel right on one platform than nearly right on two.

Who writes the timelines?
People do. Every 280-character beat you read was typed by another person, and the deeper you go into a branch, the more likely each beat came from a different writer than the one before it. That hand-off is the point — a timeline nobody owns reads differently from a story one person plotted.
There is no generated filler and no bot padding out empty questions. If a branch is short, it is short because nobody has written the next beat yet. That is an invitation.
Can I delete my stuff?
Yes. Settings has a delete-account control that removes your account, your profile and everything you wrote, and it does not route you to an email address to beg. You can also delete any single timeline you have written without deleting the account.
One consequence worth knowing before you do it: if other people have built beats on top of one of your branches, deleting yours leaves the branch with a removed beat in the middle rather than silently rewriting what they wrote. We will not edit somebody else's words to tidy up yours.

Why 280 characters?
Because the limit is doing real work. A timeline you can read in four seconds is a timeline you will actually swipe through, and a limit that tight forces the writer to pick the one detail that carries the whole idea — the mirror that lags, the payphone that keeps ringing.
It also flattens the field. Nobody wins whatIf by writing more than you. Questions are capped shorter still, at 140, for the same reason: a premise that needs a paragraph is not a premise yet.
