Information we collect
- Account details — your email address, display name, @handle, and an optional profile photo.
- Content you create — the what-if questions, branches (timelines) and replies you write, and the likes and reports you make. This content is public by design and visible to other people in the app.
- Activity — likes, streaks, XP, and which timelines you’ve viewed, used to power your profile and personalise the feed.
- Technical data — device type, app version, and anonymised crash diagnostics.
How we use your information
- To run the app: sign you in, show and rank the feed, and save what you write.
- To keep the community safe: detect abuse, act on reports, and enforce our rules.
- To send notifications you’ve opted into (e.g. when someone branches from your what-if).
- To fix bugs and improve the product.
We do not sell your personal data, and we don’t use it for third-party advertising.
Your public content
What-ifs, branches, your @handle and profile photo are visible to anyone using whatIf and may appear in shared links. If you delete a piece of content it is removed from the app; copies others already shared or screenshotted are outside our control.
Where your data lives
Your data is stored securely with Supabase (hosted on AWS) and encrypted in transit. Access is restricted by row-level security so people can only reach what they’re allowed to.
Third-party services
- Supabase — authentication, database, and file storage.
- Firebase Crashlytics — anonymised crash reporting.
- RevenueCat / Apple App Store / Google Play — if you buy a subscription, billing is handled by the stores; we receive purchase status, not your card details.
Children
whatIf is not directed at children under 13, and you must be at least 13 to create an account.
Your rights
You can view and edit your profile in-app, export your data from Settings → Legal & Privacy → Export My Data, and delete your account from Settings → Danger Zone. You can also email us to exercise these rights. See how to delete your account.
Data retention
We keep your data while your account is active. When you delete your account, your profile and content are removed promptly and purged from backups within 30 days, except where we must keep records to comply with law.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes we’ll update this page and the “last updated” date, and where appropriate notify you in the app.
